Outputs
The objective of the project is to understand interactions between the legal system and the ecological sustainability transformation,
identify key structural challenges in Finnish and EU law for its implementation, and develop tools and approaches to address them. The
project’s main outcome is a conceptual model that enables identification of forces that countervail or support the sustainability
transformation, along with a theory of change grounded in complexity theory for implementing legal system reforms that support
sustainability. The project also develops a novel regulatory impact assessment model enabling more precise evaluation of changes within
a complex legal system and coupled social ecological technological systems. A central conclusion is that environmental sustainability
goals cannot be achieved without structural changes to core principles of the legal system, such as property rights, freedom of contract,
legal certainty, and the limited legal personhood of nature.
